Objectives

  • At the end of the course the students can explain the most recent advances in networking.
  • They can report on the current trends in the transport layer protocols and compare different protocols operations with each other;
  • They can describe the basics of optical, wireless and mobile networking; and they can apply this in experimental settings
  • They can demonstrate network programmability and software-defined networks.
  • They are introduced to clean-slate network architectures.

Contents

The course provides an exhaustive overview of TCP, with emphasis on its flow control and congestion control mechanisms. We study the evolution of the protocol and the changes that have been introduced to increase its performance. We introduce optical networks, the multiplexing techniques used to increase data rates, such TDM and (D)WDM, and the recent developments in the area of programmable networks, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Virtualization Functions (NVFs). We look at wireless technologies, both for LAN and the WAN. Finally we also introduce clean slate Internet architectures that have evolved over the past decade and multimedia networking.

Having followed the course InterNetworking and Routing.
