Admission procedure for MSc SNE 2024-2025

Procedure for admission to the master program Security and Network Engineering (SNE) at the University of Amsterdam.

Formal UvA procedure

Procedures relating to formal entry can be found on the

UvA SNE application and admission page.

All students have to pass the intake procedure.

Application deadlines:

     Non-EU/EEA students: January 31st, 2024
     NL/EU/EEA students: June 30th, 2024

There is no need to complete the intake exams before applying.
You can change information and add document after submitting your initial application.

Intake procedure

Students must have the correct preparatory training and knowledge as well as motivation to be able to successfully graduate from the Master SNE. All students must submit a motivation letter and participate in an intake procedure.

The intake procedure consists of 5 exams. Upon passing these exams, students are invited for an intake interview.

There are three separate opportunities to take part in the intake procedure, one in March, one in May, and one in July. Please join as early as possible. If you happen to fail one or more exams, you can retake them in May and July.

The intake tests will cover the following topics.

The mentioned materials only give an indication of the required level of knowledge about a topic.

Networking

Subject: Elementary knowledge of (TCP/IP) networking.

Material:

Unix

Subject: Knowledge of a variety of GNU/*nix command line programs.

Material: UNIX Tutorial for Beginners

Algebra

Subject: Questions to test basic knowledge of algebra.

Material:

Discrete Mathematics

Subject: Logic, Set, and Graph Theory

Material (text):

Logic Chapters 1 - 2
Set Theory Chapters 1 - 3

Material (videos):

Logic and Set Theory Lectures 3 - 9
Graph Theory Chapter 1 (you don't have to understand all proofs)

Python

Subject: Python (version 3) programming skills for creating shell scripts.

During your SNE master´s, you often need to automate basic sysadmin tasks
(e.g. for experiments and projects).

In this exam you're asked to write a couple of shell scripts, each with their own task/goal.

Searching the Internet during the Python exam is allowed.

Subject: Reading and summarizing a technical document.

Intake interview

During the intake interview we want to hear about your motivation and educational background. We also ask you to present your bachelor thesis (just in speech—no PowerPoint!)

Intake exam dates

For our Amsterdam intake, the dates are:

  • The first intake day is on Wednesday, 27 March 2024
  • A second intake day is on Wednesday, 29 May 2024
  • The last intake day is on Wednesday, 24 July 2024

Dates for the remote/international intake are:

  • Wednesday, 13 March 2024
  • Wednesday, 17 April 2024
  • Wednesday, 15 May 2024 (EU/EAA only)

Disputes

Appeals against admission decisions may be lodged within six weeks of the decision with the UvA Examination Appeals Board (COBEX, College van Beroep voor de Examens) P.O. Box 19268, 1000 GG Amsterdam.

Then, send an e-mail to info@os3.nl to register for the intake exams.
